Although basic training promoted unity, most recruits did not encounter American from every part of society. At the start of the war, the U.S. military was segregated. White recruits did not train alongside African Americans. African Americans had seperate barracks, latrines, mess halls, and recrational facilities. Once trained, African Americans were organized into their own military u nits, but white officers generally commanded them.
